I Hate Hogs, Too!
A few posts back I talked about how much I hate coyotes....well my second most hated critter is a feral hog. They can completely wipe out a food plot in one night - rooting it up so badly you have to completely start over and re-plant the plot from scratch.
At the C4 We are fortunate to not have a hog problem. We trap them religiously and we have great neighboring land owners all around us that do the same. We all catch a few on a regular basis but they don't impact our properties because we remain committed and diligent at keeping them under control - but believe me, if we let up on the pressure for even a short while we would soon be over run by those devils.
A close friend of mine who owns some prime whitetail property about 100 miles south of us isn't so lucky - he catches them 10 to 15 at a time in a special trap that allows him to remotely trigger the gate after he watches all the hogs in a group go into the trap on a remote wireless camera. He has been doing this for quite some time now but doesn't seem to have made a dent in the population because he doesn't get any help from neighboring land owners. EVERYONE has to do their part if we are going to win this war.
Chase recently caught these two in a trap that we have setup on the very edge of our property near a creek that marks our border to hopefully catch them before they figure out how to root under the fence and invade the heart of the ranch. They can be a real hassle to clean but they are delicious slow smoked on the pit. We like to cut them in half lengthwise and put an entire half in the smoker.....let it stay there a while - delicious!
